Es gibt viele Gründe einen VPN Zugang zu verwenden. Anonymität im Internet ist heute mehr den je gefragt. Ob beim Filesharing, hierbei ist zu beachten das nicht alle VPN Anbieter die Verwendung von P2P erlauben, oder aber Zensur im Internet zu umgehen.

Es gibt kostenlose VPN Dienste wo man nach Registrierung sofort ohne extra Software installieren zu müssen starten kann. Meist handelt es sich hierbei um Server in den Vereinigten Staaten die mehr oder weniger stark ausgelastet sind. Für das Browsern im Netz reicht es meistens aus solange die Seiten nicht allzu groß sind. Doch will man mehr wie etwa Videoclips ansehen trifft man schnell an die Grenzen denn die Geschwindigkeit welche meist nur wenige 100 kb beträgt reicht kaum um livestreams oder gar Downloads zu starten.

Proxy Lösungen stehen den von VPN deutlich im Nachteil. Man kann beides nicht miteinander vergleichen. Bei den meisten Proxys handelt es sich um transparente, nicht voll anonyme Server welche die wirkliche IP mit senden und damit die Herkunft verraten.

Anders bei den kostenpflichtigen VPN Providern. Man hat dort oftmals die Auswahlmöglichkeit zwischen verschiedenen Server Standorten (Gateways). Der Grund warum mehr und mehr P2P Benutzer zu sogenannte 1Click Hostern ausweichen denke ich liegt in erster Linie in der Sicherheit der eigenen Anonymität. Wer möchte schon seine wirkliche IP und damit meist auch seinen Namen offen legen bei dem was er gerade Downloadet.
